Finasteride is the first FDA-approved oral treatment for male hair loss, and Minoxidil is the only FDA-approved topical treatment for male androgenic alopecia. Whether comparing RU58841 with Finasteride or Minoxidil, the goal was to test the efficacy of RU58841 in treating hair loss. Is RU58841 better than Finasteride and Minoxidil? If not, why use it? We have compared RU58841 with Minoxidil, this time, we’ll take a look at RU58841 vs Finasteride.
The main cause of androgenic alopecia is the buildup of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) outside the hair follicle, so aiming at addressing the effects of DHT is actually fundamental to addressing hair loss. In men, a portion of the testosterone produced by the body convert into DHT through the action of 5α-reductase. If we inhibit the action of 5α-reductase, the DHT production also reduce, thereby fundamentally solving the problem of hair loss.
Finasteride is a 5α-reductase inhibitor that prevents hair loss by inhibiting the action of 5α-reductase to reduce the production of DHT. But Finasteride orally and reduces DHT levels throughout the body, so there maybe more side effects. At the same time, Finasteride reduces blood DHT by 65 to 70 percent, rather than reducing DHT levels by 100 percent, retaining a portion of DHT to function in the body, meaning that it does not reduce DHT in the scalp to low enough levels.
RU-58841 does not act through 5α-reductase, which is an antiandrogen that directly prevents androgens from binding to the corresponding receptors, thereby preventing DHT from acting in the scalp hair follicles and blocking DHT’s action.
Both RU58841 and Finasteride work by reducing DHT, but RU58841 acts on androgen receptors and Finasteride acts on 5α-reductase.
From this mode of action, Finasteride acts in the front (before DHT generation) and RU58841 acts in the back (after DHT generation). Therefore, if you use Finasteride for hair growth, you may not need to use RU58841 at all. Accordingly, if you use Finasteride after the hair growth effect is not obvious, by topical application of RU58841, you can further reduce the part of the scalp that escapes the effect of Finasteride produced by DHT, in this case, RU58841 is a further supplement to Finasteride.
In actual use, the vast majority of people who use RU58841 are people who either didn’t work or didn’t find it effective after using Finasteride and Minoxidil. When use RU58841 as a supplement to Finasteride, only needs to reduce a small amount of DHT , so use a small dose will lower side effects. With the increasing number of people using RU58841, RU58841 is also often used independently of Finasteride and Minoxidil.
