Minoxidil is probably the first hair loss treatment you know about, and it’s easy to buy a Minoxidil solution or foam finished product either offline or online. Accordingly, it may not be easy to find a minoxidil raw powder supplier. If you are reading this article, you are in luck because you have found a minoxidil raw powder vendor.
For individual users who buy minoxidil raw powder, the next difficulty point may be how to make solution at home.
I tried to search for the preparation method of minoxidil solution on the Internet, but unfortunately, no direct information. Maybe because there are so many finished products, people don’t pay much attention to how to make their own. Or maybe it’s because this kind of information doesn’t sell the finished product. No matter what the reason is, I have compiled a preparation method of make minoxidil solution according to my known knowledge points for your information.
As we know, Minoxidil solution contains three solvents, propylene glycol, alcohol, and water. It is known to be slightly soluble in water and easily soluble in propylene glycol or ethanol. Prior to the preparation of Minoxidil, knowing its solubility value in various solvents is the key to finding a preparation method.
This is relatively easy to obtain. Minoxidil has a solubility of 75mg/ml in propylene glycol, 29mg/ml in alcohol, and 2.2mg/ml in water, respectively. If we were to make a 2% solution, that is, a 1ml solution containing 20mg of Minoxidil powder, we would dissolve enough Minoxidil powder using alcohol. Similarly, 5% solution is 1ml liquid with 50mg minoxidil powder. To make 5% liquid, alcohol alone is not enough, and propylene glycol with higher solubility is required.
The most popular is the minoxidil liquid with a concentration of 5%, and we’ll use this as an example.
A 5% minoxidil solution contains 50mg of minoxidil powder per 1ml of liquid, and needs 5g of minoxidil powder to prepare a 100ml solution. So what’s the solvent ratio?
If 100ml of solution is all alcohol, 2900mg of pwoder(2.9g) can be dissolved. Obviously not enough. We need to add propylene glycol.
If add 50ml of propylene glycol , we can dissolve 3750mg of powder (3.75g) ; if the rest is all alcohol, 50ml needs 1450mg(1.45g) powder, a total of 5.2g. This is the maximum solubility. Therefore, the ratio of propylene glycol should not be less than 50%.
I saw a formula that was propylene glycol 63% and alcohol 20%, and the rest was to add water. Let’s see if this solvent can dissolve enough powder.
Now the total amount to be prepared is 100ml,63% propylene glycol is 63ml, which can dissolve 4725mg minoxidil powder, and 20% alcohol is 20ml, which can dissolve 580mg . Now alcohol + propylene glycol total 83ml, can dissolve 5.3g(5305mg) minoxidil powder. So that’s a good mix, and adding another 17ml of water will equal 100ml of liquid.
The preparation ratio of 100ml 5% minoxidil solution is 5g minoxidil raw powder + 63ml propylene glycol + 20ml alcohol + 17ml water. Because 5g minoxidil takes up part of the volume, the amount of water used is probably less than 17ml. When you add 63ml propylene glycol and 20ml alcohol to a 100ml container, add 5g minoxidil powder and stir it thoroughly, Add water to the scale line to rise to 100ml, which is the standard 100ml liquid.
In the specific preparation process, you will need an electronic scale with high accuracy to weigh raw powder, a measuring cup to measure the solvent, a stirring stick, a 100ml measuring cup to mix them, and finally, an airtight container to hold your finished product.
If you need to make a 50ml 5% minoxidil solution, you will need 2.5mg minoxidil raw powder + 31.5ml propylene glycol + 10ml alcohol +8.5ml water.
At room temperature, a 5% minoxidil liquid of 100ml or 50ml can be obtained using the above ratio. If you need to formulate a minoxidil solution of 2% or 10%, that’s another problem. We may continue to update the ratio of minoxidil solution with different content in the future, so please keep an eye on us.
