Finasteride and sildenafil prevent hair loss without sexual side effects

Sildenafil is a PED5 inhibitor with vasodilatory effects. Studies have shown that Sildenafil regulates hair growth by enhancing the expression of endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), which are responsible for hair growth. At the same time, Sildenafil accelerates induction of initial hair growth by stimulating perifollicle blood vessel formation.

By enhancing the expression of endothelial growth factor (VEGF), sildenafil induces and maintains hair follicle development and mediates the hair growth cycle.

Hair follicles undergo cycles of initial hair growth, middle hair growth, and end hair growth, as well as rearrangement of the skin vasculature during the hair cycle. Since blood vessels are necessary to provide oxygen and nutrients to skin and hair follicle cells, hair growth depends on the induction of angiogenesis.

One of the ways Minoxidil grows hair is by increasing skin blood flow to the scalp. As a result, sildenafil has a similar pattern of hair growth to Minoxidil.

One trial compared the hair growth effect of sildenafil versus Minoxidil. In the trial, 30 patients with androgenic alopecia were treated with 1% topical sildenafil and 5% topical Minoxidil in one group. The results showed the effect of sildenafil on hair growth. 

Finasteride and sildenafil for hair loss review
